St James Prep, Woodland Primary top tennis tourney

ST. JAMES Prep and Woodland Primary took home the champion boy and girl prizes respectively on Tuesday's final day of the finals of the Alliance Investment Management 11 and under all-island tournament which was held at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre in Kingston.

Jevaun Shaw of St. James Prep defeated schoolmate Tevin Kerr 6-0, 0-6, 7-6 while Suwan Satahoo of Woodland Primary in Manchester defeated Dejhah James of Chetwood Primary of St. James 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.

Both finals went long beyond the scheduled close of play for the day as the quality of the tennis ensured that the matches were lengthy.

The champions received book vouchers from tournament sponsors Alliance Investment Management redeemable at Sangster's Book Stores for $5,000 each while the runners-up received vouchers for $2,000 each, also redeemable at Sangster's Book Stores.

There were also vouchers for the zone winners of $2,000 each and $1,000 for the runners-up.

Sectional prizes were handed out as follows: Best Sportsmanship Boy went to Romaine Mitchell of Siloh Primary; Best Sportsmanship Girl - Michael Ann Denton of Marjam Prep; Most Disciplined Team was awarded to Marjam Prep; Leon Lamont of Parry Town Primary took the prize for the Most helpful PE Teacher/Coach - Male while Janice Kitson of Liguanea Prep copped the prize for the Most helpful PE Teacher/Coach - Female.

The zone winners were Eastern Central Zone - winner boy - Romario Taylor of Naggo Head Primary, winner girl - Chenelle Estrene of John Mills Primary; North Central Zone - winner boy - Charles Gowdie of Columbus Prep, winner girl - Michael Ann Denton of Marjam Prep; South Central Zone - winner boy - Jemar Bartley of Mount St. Joseph Prep, winner girl - national champion Suwan Satahoo of Woodland Primary and the Western Zone - winner boy - national champion - Jevaun Shaw of St. James Prep and winner girl - Jejhah James also of St. James Prep.
