Williamson Cup 'Paid For'
published: Saturday | November 18, 2006

Three trophies are at stake on today's Caymanas Park 12-race programme, including the mile-and-quarter renewal of the Glen T. Williamson Cup, a restricted allowance race (non winners of three other than) for four-year-olds and up.

Also on the well-supported card are the two-year-old maiden special for the Royal Lancaster Trophy over the round five course for native- bred colts and geldings, and the divided $240,000-$210,000 claiming race over 1600 metres for the Violet Armond Memorial Cup in which CRUISING ALTITUDE and CORDITE are firm fancies in their respective divisions.

I AM PAID FOR, to be ridden by title-chasing jockey Trevor Simpson for trainer Welsh Soutar, is almost sure to start favourite in the Williamson Cup, despite facing worthwhile opposition from the likes of PECKUS OUT, SOY MUJER, RAINBOW TRAIN and the recent winners RED CHRISTMAS and PRIME SUNDOWN.

no disgrace

After winning easily over 1500 metres on August 12 ahead of PECKUS OUT, PRIME SUNDOWN wasn't disgraced in her subsequent race over today's trip on August 26 when finishing 6 1/4 lengths fourth to HIGH GRADE and subsequent winner VICTORIA. PRIME SUNDOWN actually made most and was still bang in contention when a length third a furlong out.

PECKUS OUT, on the other hand, won easily over 1700 metres on September 2 and last time outran creditably when finishing third to FUSILIER and I AM PAID FOR over the circular nine course with 57.0kg. A similar effort here should take him close.

But it all comes back to I AM PAID FOR, who reserves his best for two-turn races.

The four-year-old gelding by Irish Quest out of La Professora finished a remote third to runaway winner HERECOMESFUDGIE over 2000 metres in overnight allowance company on October 14, and prior to that, beat all barring FUSILIER over the circular nine course, a race in which he beat the third horse PECKUS OUT by 3 1/2 lengths.

alert at the start

In fact, I AM PAID FOR reports with everything in his favour today. Not only is he conveniently placed in the scales with 54.0kg, but having been kept on the move at exercise only needs to be alert at the start in order to put away this field. Now dropped in class, his final rattle should prove hard to withstand.

I also like the well-forward Feanny debutante RUM TALK (Simpson up) to win the Royal Lancaster Trophy ahead of CHIPONYOURSHOULDER, who made a promising debut recently.

Other firm fancies are ALNASKRA to rebound in the third race for two-year-olds, SEA CRACKERS to catch ROYAL MAJESTY in the sixth, JUST SOME THOUGHTS to go one better in the seventh for overnight allowance horses and consistent course horse NUMERO UNO (down in class) over NASATOL and ROYAL MALICE in the 10th race over the straight.
