Make it a double at TGI Friday's
published: Thursday | November 23, 2006

Tesi Johnson, Gleaner Writer

Left: Jack Daniel's Double Barrel Chicken and Steak, served with cheddar mashed potatoes, broccoli in garlic butter sauce, topped with pineapple pico de gallo.   Right: Also on this promotional menu is their Double Barrel Kahlua Chocolate Cake, filled with chocolate cheese ganache, topped with shavings of dark chocolate, and dusted with confectioner's sugar. For $400, one can enjoy this sinful sweet treat as a fitting ending to a satisfying meal.

Kingston Restaurant Week (KRW) participating eatery, TGI Friday's, was a hive of activity last Thursday as members of the media were in the house to celebrate the new menu items.

Jack Daniel's charcoal-mellowed Tennessee whiskey, simmered with brown sugar, onions and a secret combination of spices is the sauce at the centre of TGI Friday's Jack Daniel's Double Barrel combos, where diners may enjoy not only one meat slathered with the sweet whiskey-based concoction, but two!

The Jack Daniel's menu is already a regular offering at TGI Friday's, but for three months, which started on Friday, November 10, TGI Friday's challenges their diners to 'make it a double' and try any of their combinations of chicken and steak, shrimp and steak, shrimp and ribs or North Atlantic salmon and shrimp, all basted with the Jack Daniel's sauce and served with cheddar mashed potatoes, broccoli in garlic sauce and topped with pineapple pico de gallo - with pairings priced from $1,050 to $1,650 (tax and gratuity not included).

Culinary synergy

Using alcoholic beverages as a recipe base can produce culinary synergy once a working combination is made. TGI Friday's has found synergy with these Jack Daniel's pairings, as the sweet and smoky whiskey nicely complements the meats with which it is served. The sauce has a similar texture and sweetness to a barbecue sauce, but is a lot bolder as that indelible 'zing' of the Jack Daniel's whiskey is evident, but not overpowering.
