The Editor, Sir:I write this letter to congratulate the newly elected Congresswoman Yvette Clarke who won a seat recently in the United States Congress and who will represent the 11th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York, with an estimated 60 per cent black population and of Caribbean people.
Most Jamaicans and more so people from the African Diaspora must be very proud to have someone of the ilk of Ms. Clarke ascend to the U.S. House of Representatives. She can now lobby members of Congress on matters that affect them across the Caribbean Community.
This landslide victory at the polls with Ms. Clarke, a Democrat, receiving 89 per cent of the votes will certainly impact greatly on the Caribbean people living in America. They have been facing racial and ethnic problems over the years and have been socially marginalised.
As Ms. Clarke continues to follow in the footsteps of her mother, Una Clarke Jamaican-born, who was the first Caribbean woman to serve in effective office in New York City.
She gave the assurance that she will work with the people in a united front, especially those of the same ethnic background, representing them both locally and internationally.
Of course, we in Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean wish her tremendous success in her future political career as she gives her service for the upliftment of humanity.
I am, etc.,
