Excellent 'Danceworks' at Edna Manley
published: Sunday | November 26, 2006

Jeanette Campbell, Contributor

Alive and well was my feeling at the end of the delightful, dynamic studio concert held recently at the School of Dance.

The event was produced by Danceworks, which comprises members of the student body of the School Of Dance at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.

From the powerful rendition of the national anthem by dance student Stephanie Walters, and the warm interactivity of the MC for the evening, Janelle Dyer, to the pulsating energy and enthusiasm of the performers, the studio theatre came alive, thrilling and captivating us, the appreciative audience.

Congratulations on the playful sexiness achieved in 'Too Hottt' and the sensitive interpretations of 'Just De Runnings'.

Lecturer, Arsenio Andrade's duet was charmingly performed and the drama student who contributed 'A Nuh Everybody Weh Dance A Dancer' tore up the "house with her brilliant personal characterisation of a pop style of performance.

The third year students presented some really interesting choreographic ideas in 'No Games'. The evening ended with a provocative, charismatic presentation of 'The Gathering', a celebration of revival ritual choreographed by Roberta Daley.

It was explained to us that Danceworks, the performing corps of the School Of Dance, has launched a new beginning and is gearing up for a major concert in April of 2007.

They can sell me a ticket right away. It is clear from the creativity and innovation displayed in the choreography and the vivacity and technical strength of the dancers that these young students are firmly ensconced in the tradition of all that is fun, entertaining and fabulous in Jamaican dance theatre.
