Three attempts and still alive
published: Sunday | November 26, 2006

Nataleeis a 24 year-old college student. She has attempted suicide on three occasions and has survived to share her story.

When she was 18, Natalee tried poisoning herself. Her parents had temporarily left her in the care of an aunt and had gone overseas. Natalee said the treatment there was horrible and it compounded other personal problems she was having.

Two years later, she again attempted suicide after a boy tried to rape her at a school where she was doing teaching practice. Natalee said the attempted rape came at a point when she was blaming herself for several hiccups in her life at the time. She could not find the strength to go on and turned to a an overdose of tablets which did not work.

By age 22, Natalee had made her third suicide attempt. She had become pregnant and her fiancé denied responsibility and everything around her was falling apart.

"I took what I believed to be a lethal number of tablets and alcohol and woke up in the hospital ... The doctors said I had no pulse. That was when I realise how close to death I had gone," says Natalee, who vowed never to try it again.

"I now realise that there is always hope ... Taking your own life solves nothing and besides, it's a first-class ticket to hell," Natalee tells The Sunday Gleaner.

Not her real name.
