Arnett get revenge
published: Monday | November 27, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Arnett - 5

Shane Edwards 15th minute, Leon Strickland 33rd, Marcelino Blackburn 36th, 83rd, Craig Gordon 62nd

Wadadah - 1

Jermaine Anderson 54th

Arnett Gardens turned in a dominant performance, dispatching westerners Wadadah 5-1, to get their Wray and Nephew Premier League second round off to a flying start at the Tony Spaulding Complex yesterday.

The 'Junglist' who were trampled 3-1 by Wadadah on the opening day of the league, were clearly not out to make the same mistake twice and bossed proceedings from the opening whistle.

After a promising spell of possession Shane Edwards headed Arnett in front in the 15th minute, before the league's leading scorer Leon Strickland blasted in his ninth goal of the season past Wadadah custodian Gavine Barrett in the 33rd minute.

The writing was on the ball when Barrett was once again beaten to the ball, this time by Marcelino Blackburn who amassed the insurmountable Arnett Gardens lead three minutes later.

Rewarded

Wadadah began thesecond half a positive team and were rewarded for excursions forward, when they were awarded a 54th minute penalty. Jermaine Anderson though asked to retake his first penalty, beat Arnett custodian Julian McLeish again to pull one back for his.

However, the game was all but over when Strickland picked up a ball eight yards from goal and then set up Craig Gordon who rolled the ball around Barrett in the 62nd minute.

Blackburn finished thing off in fine style in the 83rd minute when he collected a pass from Strickland, turned his defender the wrong way and then held his nerve to find the back of the net from six yards out.

"We have done some work technically, tactically and physically in preparation for them. They beat us the last time but in the end I think it was our physical aspect that paid off today," said Arnett assistant coach Michael Francis.

"This win today is a statement we wanted to make it from the start of the season that didn't happen and now our immediate objective is to be in the mid-season final," he added.

Wadadah coach And who saw his team concede more than three goals for the first time this season, stated that such a loss was inevitable.

"Since we played the final game of the first round we have had one and two training sessions due to the weather and other factors." he said. "Our conditioning was not up to par, there are some issue that we need to iron out internally and if we are going to continue to compete at the highest level all these distractions will have to be eliminated." he added.
