The Editor, Sir:
The spate of murders in the society cannot be overlooked; however, the level of resultant fears can be reduced through the release of additional information, which is important to ensure clarity within the public domain.
In reporting murders, in addition to the circumstances, allegations of involvement or innocence should be divulged, and each case be categorised. This should be done in an effort to present an assessment tool for citizens who wish to determine the level of threats to which they are exposed.
Certainly, not all cases of murder involved an "innocent" deceased.
Hypothetically, the media would report that, for October, 20 persons were murdered in a particular parish. This would give the impression that anyone could be murdered in that parish soon.
However, if it was reported that ten were alleged gang members, seven were killed because of alleged narcotics association and three were killed in domestic violence; this would not have elicited as much fear as the previous report.
I am, etc.,
