Free HIV testing on Friday
published: Wednesday | November 29, 2006

Looking for somewhere to get tested for HIV/AIDS and have your results in 30 minutes?

Well look no further. The Ministry of Health will on Friday transform Emancipation Park, St. Andrew, into a mecca of HIV testing.

Results will be available within 30 minutes through a highly efficient and confidential system. And you don't have to pay. Yes this will be free of cost!

This will be the main activity to commemorate World AIDS Day, which will be observed under the theme: "Keep the Promise - Get Tested".

Why is it important to get tested?

There are currently 40 million people infected with HIV/AIDS around the world. Of the approximately 25,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Jamaica, some 15,000 do not know their status.

Knowing your status will allow you to get treated and also prevent the spread of the disease.

Prevention of sexual transmission.

  • A - Abstain- this method of preventing transmission is strongly recommended for children and adolescents and is appropriate for anyone who practises delaying sex until the 'right time.'

  • B - Be faithful to one sexual partner who is uninfected and mutually faithful.

  • C- Correct and consistent condom use.

  • D - Do get tested for HIV.
