Indiscipline and misconduct on executive buses
published: Thursday | November 30, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

It is with much disgust that I write explaining to the society the level of indiscipline and misconduct that takes place on the nation's public transport. This time around the JUTC buses are off the hook.

I am talking about the executive buses that run from Half-Way Tree to Lawrence Tavern. They leave a lot to be desired. These buses play such lewd music and at such deafening volume.

Three weeks ago I boarded bus licence number PB9348 in Constant Spring. on reaching the vicinity of The Queen's High school the driver proceeded to turn up the music full blast. I then asked him to turn it down when I was told by the conductor (expletives and all) to get off the bus because my $50 wasn't enough to make such a request. I did alight from the bus, but it just got me thinking ... "When did we get to the stage where paying patrons can be treated like this?"

My next concern is for the students, or, let me say, some of the students who attend Oberlin High school and travel on these buses. They are indeed a disgrace to their school. The songs that are being played are played for them, and they sing on top of their voices with the expletives just rolling off their tongues. Then the laughs and boisterous behaviour leave a bitter taste in the mouths of decent Jamaicans.

What is the country coming to? What is going to happen in the next couple of years when these teenagers take over the country. Let me tell you ... chaos, anarchy, indiscipline and downright disrespect for rules and law and order. As a matter of fact, don't take it from me, just go down to the bus park in Half-Way Tree one morning and observe.

May God help us to help them.

I am, etc.,
