Five straight for U-16 netballers
published: Thursday | November 30, 2006

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

Title-holders Barbados toppled previously- unbeaten Trinidad and Tobago and ex-champions Jamaica continued their relentless run at the Jean Pierre Caribbean Under-16 netball tournament on Tuesday night.

In the featured clash of undefeated teams, Barbados edged T&T's Calypso Girls 29-27 to record their fifth consecutive win.

Jamaica also moved to 5-0 with a 54-16 whipping of Dominica as they continued to advertise the most impressive statistics in the tournament.

The result means that Barbados and Jamaica are the only two undefeated teams in this eight-team tournament and when they clash tomorrow, it will be a grudge match for the championship.

Last year in St. Kitts, Barbados handed Jamaica their first ever defeat (26-24) in the seven-year history of the tournament to emerge champions.

Jamaica were 38 goals better than Dominica as they registered the fourth 50-plus goal scoreline in the tournament.

Led all quarters

The five-time tournament winners led all the quarters 14-8, 28-8, 42-14 and their athletic defenders did not allow their opponents a single goal in the second quarter.

Christina Solomon sank a solid 34 goals from 37 attempts for the Jamaicans.

The match-up between Barbados and hosts Trinidad and Tobago held all the attention at the Jean Pierre Complex.

Bidding to emulate Jamaica as the only team in the history of the championship to successfully defend their title, Barbados jumped out to an 8-7 first-quarter lead.

The teams exchanged goals in the second quarter but the visitors held the upper hand when they closed-off the first half 13-11.

Despite strong support for the home team, Barbados played like champions and pushed themselves four goals clear of the talented but pint-sized T&T team at one point during the third frame.

In the final quarter, T&T coach - former national and a World Championship winner - Jennifer Frank sparked her charges to take the fight to the talented Bajans and scored nine goals.

But the home team's defence gave up a similar number of goals and Barbados ran out winners of the competitive match.

Ace shooter Abeje Carrington collected 19 goals from 25 tries for Barbados, while Anuola Camejo (18/21) led T&T's scoring.

Grenada snapped a four-game losing streak to beat winless Antigua and Barbuda 24-19.

Annisha Cape (12/15) and Christa Stephen (12/13) led Grenada's scoring. And in the night's fourth game, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, used Tahesia Warner's game-high 21 goals to beat St. Lucia 29-23.
