Absences create Cup openings for others
published: Tuesday | December 5, 2006

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CMC):

West Indies head coach Bennett King believes that facing Pakistan without two of his key One Day players will test the overall mettle of the team.

Bravo and Sarwan have pulled out of the series and King believes the team will be losing good value with their absence.

"It will test us as a team without two of our key one day performers over the past six to 12 months in (Ramnaresh) Sarwan and (Dwayne) Bravo," King said.

West Indies vice-captain Sarwan suffered a small hairline fracture to his right foot while batting in the second innings of the final Test match in Karachi and will miss the entire five match series. He was hit by a yorker from Pakistan quickie Umar Gul.

Bravo will also miss the entire series after he was released from the squad to return home to be with persons close to him who are unwell.

Fast bowler Corey Collymore has been named as a replacement for Bravo, but no replacement has yet been named for Sarwan.

Sarwan, earlier this year, won the Man-of-the-Series award in the West Indies v India series in the Caribbean, while Bravo's all round game has been critical to the West Indies successes over the past year. The young right hander also scored his first ODI century in the recent ICC Champions Trophy in India.

"Sarwan is considered one of the leading batters in the one day game and he has proved that over a long period of time and has been a key to our past successes," King told WindiesCricket.com.

"Bravo was adapting to different roles within our side and it's unfortunate that we can't build on those but where one door shuts another one opens," King said speaking from the team hotel in Islamabad.

"It allows opportunity to others trying to stake their claim for World Cup berth," King reasoned.

Runako Morton, Dwayne Smith who have not been able to command regular places in the final eleven along with rookie Lendl Simmons will be in line for positions in the absence of Sarwan and Bravo.

"The players coming in (Ian Bradshaw, Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Smith) bring with them freshness and energy after what's been a long tour for us," King said after the team's practice session in Rawalpindi on Sunday was cancelled due to rain.
