Dunoon, St Hugh's to clash for crown
published: Wednesday | December 6, 2006

Carolyn Johnson, Freelance Writer

DUNOON WILL meet St. Hugh's in the 2006 final of the Digicel/ISSA urban schoolgirl netball competition tomorrow at the Leila Robinson Courts.

The teams secured their places after beating Tarrant 30-25 and Wolmer's 34-27, respectively, in yesterday's semi-finals.

In junior action, Bridgeport and Queen's will face off. Bridgeport beat Ardenne 16-13 while Queen's got the better of St. Hugh's 21-15.

Though it was a difficult match, Dunoon's coach, C. Lloyd Walker, claims that Wolmer's made a grave mistake which his team capitalised on. Wolmer's sent their goal attack, Sashalee Wallen, to goal keep to help boost the defence in the third quarter. Throughout the match Wolmer's had been suffering in defence.

Their biggest problem was Dunoon's goal shooter, Crystal Gordon, who was much taller and stouter than the petite Yanique Vassell. Gordon's height and accurate shooting were an asset, propelling the Dunoon team to victory.

"(The game was) hard fought, but the hotter the battle, the sweeter the victory. Wolmer's gave it their best, but the change by the Wolmer's coach cemented our victory," Walker said.

In his defence, Wolmer's' coach, Winston Wilson, said the change could have worked and did.

Good fight

"We went out there and we put up a very good fight. We needed the height in the Dunoon shooting area. I was experimenting by putting her there. The centre court is where our weakness was, we lost the game in the centre court," Wilson said.

Still, Wilson praised his team for its performance.

"I think they have done well. Next year we will have the same team so hopefully we can spin a few surprises and win the league," he said.

In the rural competition, the quarter-finals will be held at Brooks Park today.

The junior section will feature Anchovy vs Glenmuir, Holmwood vs Bishop Gibson, Cambridge vs Tacius Golding, Denbigh vs Herbert Morrison.

In the senior competition, it's Herbert Morrison vs Holmwood, Edwin Allen vs deCarteret, Manning's vs Old Harbour, Denbigh vs Manchester.

Action starts at 10:30 a.m.
