Mullings wants full audit of Universal Access Fund
published: Thursday | December 7, 2006

Mullings

Opposition spokesman on Mining, Energy and Telecommunications, Clive Mullings, wants the Auditor General to carry out a full audit of the Universal Access Fund and report his findings to Parliament.

At a recent Gleaner Editors' Forum, Mr. Mullings recommended that parliamentary oversight be introduced for the fund.

The fund was established to collect a levy on incoming international calls to Jamaica.

Moving a resolution in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, the Opposition Spokesman said the expenditure undertaken by the fund raised questions of conflict of interest, transparency and accountability.

More than J$1 billion per annum flows into the fund and, according to Mr. Mullings, no audited accounts of the fund have been submitted to Parliament.
