HARBOUR VIEW will be paying attention to the Wray and Nephew National Premier League this Sunday after ensuring an extended stay in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships by topping Group A on Tuesday night.
Hosting the four-team group, the former Caribbean champions were expected to find it easy to make it to the next round.
On Tuesday night they fulfilled that expectation after a comfortable 2-0 win over Curaçao's SV Centro Social Deportivo Barber to end the tournament with nine points from three games, three more than Barber, who had six when the game began.
"I don't know who we are going to play yet, but we have to get back to concentrating on Sunday when we play against Reno," said Harbour View coach Lenworth Hyde Sr. after the game, paying attention to the task closest at hand.
Top scorer
On the night, it was Kavin Bryan, who with three goals topped the goalscoring charts in the group, and Oneil Smith who were the scorers for Harbour View.
Bryan notched his goal in the 11th minute to put the Curaçao team on the back foot, tapping home a Lovel Palmer cross after Jermaine Taylor broke up an attack down the middle of the park and dribbled into the opponents' half before knocking a pass to the left flank.
Harbour View took the initiative and kept applying pressure on Barber, who in truth could have gone ahead as early as the sixth minute when a cross found Edgard Cassiani Perez, who hit the ball on to the left post from just six yards with a gaping goal at his mercy.
The 'Stars of the East' got their second goal in the 57th minute when Smith, playing at wing-back, picked up a ball down the right side and miscued a cross.
Own goal
The trajectory of the delivery surprised the goalkeeper who ended up scrambling towards his near post only to parry the cross into his own net.
After the game, Barber's coach, Gersley Gysbertha, said their campaign ended with the missed opportunity in the first half.
"We had the chance to score in the first half. We didn't make a goal and if you don't make a goal you cannot win," Gysbertha said.
Hyde said he wasn't surprised by the way the game went but praised his team for playing well defensively.
"They needed the win so they had to throw everything at us and I think we defended very well again. The midfield also played well today; everybody was pulling their weight," he said.
