Simone Clarke-Cooper - Contributed
Many may remember her from her early days on television, as host of the popular 1990s teen show Rappin', but Simone Clarke-Cooper has come a long way since.
Chance played a role in her first on-air gig, but her true talent and love for the business shone brightly. Today, Clarke-Cooper is holding down the fort as a host of The Groove Theory on FAME FM and as a fill-in anchor on Television Jamaica.
The Gleaner: How did you get started in the media?
SFC: I started in 1994. I went to CPTC (Creative Production and Training Centre) to audition for voice and speech and they asked me if I was interested in doing Rappin'.
What is your dream job?
To have a hit show on television and radio and operate a voice and speech school all at the same time. I want to be working in all areas, not necessarily have a 9 -5. I enjoy what I am not now, though. I feel fulfilled.
What has been your best moment working in the media?
There hasn't been one, but the opportunity of being able to travel. It's for work, but it has broadened my horizons.
Have you been faced with negative remarks?
When I started in radio people would ask 'what is that girl doing on the air?' You have to understand, though, that the adverse comes with the territory.
If not television, what would you be doing?
I would be teaching full-time (voice and speech).
What are your favourite shows?
Law and Order (SVU), reality shows on MTV. Shows that don't require much brain power. Locally, 'On Assignment' with Janice Budd, 'ER'and 'Make Over Magic'.
Who is your favourite television personality?
Oprah is very natural and thorough. Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order and everybody at FAME (FM).
What is one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?
I am a complete homebody. I don't need to go anywhere when I am not working. I am happiest at home. I am also a complete idiot. People look at me as if I am an unapproachable person. I am not.
What are some characteristics of persons you are drawn to?
Real people. I don't like people who are pretentious.
Name the one person you would most want to meet.
I already met that person, Arif Cooper.
