The winning Lititz/Comma Pen team with the trophy after defeating Broughton in the final of the SDC National Community Cricket Championship last Saturday at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.St. Elizabeth's Lititz/Comma Pen blew away the highly-favoured Broughton of Westmoreland to win the final of the Social Development Commission's (SDC) National Community Cricket Championship (20/20 cricket), which was played last Saturday at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.
Lititz/Comma Pen defeated Broughton by 25 runs.
Apart from securing the title as the all-island community champions, Lititz/Comma Pen pocketed the first prize money of $1 million, the biggest prize money ever in local cricket, and tickets to the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Broughton pocketed $300,000 for their effort while wild card entrants Annotto Bay, who defeated Granville to take third-place, took home $100,000.
Sent to bat, Lititz/Comma Pen wasted no time in punishing the Broughton bowlers and at one point were 57-1 off five overs.
However, after losing four quick wickets, Lititz/Comma Pen recovered to 150-9 off the allotted 20 overs.
Ferron Finlay, who scored 42, received good support from Courtney Witter (29) and Caln Dyer (22). The pick of the bowlers was Vinord Wolcook who took 3-23 and Denville McKenzie (2-43).
Good bowling
In reply, Broughton, who came into the final with a 100 per cent win record, found the bowling of Lititz/Comma Pen too tough to handle.
The first over was a maiden and the second yielded just one run and after five overs Broughton had only 21 runs on the board.
In the end, Broughton were restricted to 125-9. Former Jamaica player Dixieth Palmer made 39, Derrick Thompson 20 against Clanny Witter three for eight.
The finals proved to be very exciting and attracted a massive crowd of well over 6,000 drawn from communities from all over Jamaica. One Third, Chris Martin and Jovi Rockwell were on hand to entertain the appreciative crowd.
