Student loan woe
published: Sunday | December 10, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Is the Student Loan Bureau failing its borrowers? I am quite worried about the state of the information systems at the student loan bureau. It is either they are incompetent or the workers are just too lazy to do the job properly. I took out a loan in 1998 and paid it off after I graduated in 2001.

Recently, my guarantors and I have been getting threatening letters from the bureau for non-payment of loan. I repaid every cent with all the high interest rates and closed my account at the Christiana branch of NCB.

Quite frankly, everyone within my circle of friends has had some problems with the student loan bureau with information on the repayment of their loans. Luckily people are not as trusting as before and are now keeping receipts years after they close their repayment accounts.

I therefore urge borrowers to be careful and keep their repayment receipts so that when the bureau starts with their habit of harassing people they can stop them before they destroy the lives struggling Jamaicans.
