Family members look at the body of Michael Tapper on Mountain View Avenue in St. Andrew, yesterday. Tapper was shot and killed by gunmen while he was conducting on a Toyota Hiace minibus. The driver, Darlton Green, was also murdered.

A CEASEfire that has been holding in sections of Mountain View has been broken. Residents of Saunders Lane, Mountain View Avenue, Back Bush and Jarrett Lane are now living in fear following a bloody exchange of gunfire yesterday.

Peace in jeopardy

A fragile peace was established between the communities, but it seems to now be in jeopardy.

Early yesterday morning, a 24-year-old barber, Michael Tapper, and bus driver Dalton Green, 47, both of Mountain View Avenue addresses were murdered almost 10 hours after a Jarrett Lane strongman was shot and injured.

The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) Metro Officer, Sergeant Michael Francis, said the police have not yet ascertained a motive for the killings, but are following strong leads.

Sergeant Francis said Tapper, who was doing conducting duties, and Green were aboard a Totoya Hiace passenger bus near Windward Road when they were approached by four men who opened fire, killing them on the spot. Two female bystanders were also shot and injured.

Reports received by The Sunday Gleaner, however, suggest that two of the four gunmen may have been passengers in the bus at the time of the shooting.

Meanwhile, 50-year-old Lenworth Lauther of Great Pond in St. Ann, was shot and killed at his home Friday evening.

A CCN report said that Luther, a real estate agent, had a brief conversation with a woman after which a man, armed with a gun, approached and shot him several times. The woman and her male accomplice escaped in a dark-coloured Honda Accord motor car.
