Ban arms shipment
published: Tuesday | December 12, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

The weakness that Jamaica has in dealing with the crime problem is not much different than those in the developed countries where there is democracy, free trade and freedom of speech. This weakness comes from lack of understanding that the only solution to this epidemic is to prevent it. Find its root and stop it from growing.

The weapons being manufactured and sold around the world by developed countries are killing millions. We get aid from countries like Canada, United States of America and the United Kingdom to help in fighting crime but what we really want is for these countries to ban arms shipment to our shores. We are given equipment to help in detecting drugs leaving this country but what about the equipment at their ports to prevent the export of guns and ammunition.

There is much blame directed at those firing guns on our streets but where do they get the guns from? Why aren't the musicians and politicians who have access to travel overseas not questioned or checked for their involvement in gun smuggling? When are we going to get some leaders who are patriotic and not the corrupt ones we have been having over the years?

We need leaders who are strong and willing to stand up for our people, who can identify our strengths and make our country better able to survive in today's financial world. We have the resources, we have the people, all we need are good leaders.

I am, etc.,
