'Sorry can't boil cow skin'
published: Wednesday | December 13, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Commendations to Prof. Rex Nettleford for the brilliant statement 'Britain's apology for slavery just not enough'. In the event that any of your readers have missed it, I would recommend that they get a copy of Tuesday's Gleaner, turn to Page A8 and read and read over again.

I know full well that it is fashionable to sneer at arguments for reparation to the descendants of our slave ancestors. Professor Nettleford's argument for Britain's apology to be backed by "a substantial contribution to education in the region," is an honourable one. It will never repair the damage done to a substantial group in the human family, but it is worth yet another try.

Commendable as some will find Mr. Blair's "Sorry," as ole-time people would say: "Sorry can't boil cow skin." It takes sensitivity to address the issue in the face of the reality that thousands of slaves died for little or nothing, while those who traded in their flesh and blood, were handsomely reward.

I am, etc.,

BARBARA GLOUDON
