Girls in showdown for all-island supremacy
published: Wednesday | December 13, 2006

Schoolgirls will shot for all-island supremacy in the junior and senior finals of the Digicel/Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Netball competition at Leila Robinson Courts this afternoon.

In the opening game of a two-match showdown pitting rural and urban champions, The Queen's School will take on Clarendon's Denbigh High at 1:30 p.m., while Manchester's Holmwood Tech-nical match skills against east Kingston's Dunoon Technical in the feature contest among the senior teams, at 3:30 p.m.

Fresh from victories

All the teams are fresh from title-victories as Queen's and Dunoon wrapped up the Corporate Area honours last week Thursday, followed by Denbigh and Holmwood on Monday.

Denbigh kept their unbeaten record this season with a 22-14 finals victory that prevented Holmwood from topping the rural double.

Queen's won the junior title after beating St. Hugh's 19-13 in the Corporate Area final.

In the Under-19 category, Holmwood qualified by retaining the senior crown with a 32-24 win over Edwin Allen Monday.

Full of optimism

Traditionally strong Dunoon stopped St. Hugh's 24-21 in their senior final and like the other finalists, should be full of optimism.

"We had a very competitive season right down to the last rural and urban games and we are expecting very stiff competition in the all-island finals as well," noted Joan Walker, coordinator of the competition.

"I'm looking forward to a great event ... right down to the last minute of the game," she added.

Representatives from all the schools that participated in the competition this season are expected to be among the spectators at today's grand finale.
