Lambert wants batsmen to capitalise on starts

Several batsmen got starts in Jamaica's one-day trial match at Elleston Road yesterday, but none carried on to score even a half century.

This was noted as a concern for acting captain of Jamaica's team Tamar Lambert. It adds to the sentiments echoed by coach Junior Bennett, who last week complained about the way the Jamaican batsmen were losing their wickets.

"I think 240-plus on this police pitch is a good total," Lambert said. "The only disappointment is that no one carried on after getting a start. If you are following the trial games, nobody seems to want to go on and make a century.

"We have Ingram (Lorenzo) and Powell (Shane) in the last four-day game scoring centuries and this is a one-day game where persons get starts but don't carry-on, so it's a worry. But the batsmen have been getting some runs and spending some time in the middle. We can only get better from there," Lambert said.

In yesterday's game, batting first, Lambert's XI scored 242-8 off their allotted 50 overs against David Bernard's XI who were restricted to 172-8.

Ranville Brown, 17, and Brenton Parchment, 14, put together 42 for the first wicket, the best partnership of the Lambert XI innings.

Lorenzo Ingram, 46, and Jamie Trenchfield, 31, added 40 for the fourth wicket, while Odean Brown and Lambert chipped in with 34 and 22, respectively.

Andre Dwyer ended with 3-38 and Jermaine Lawson 2-36.

In their turn at bat, Bernard XI struggled throughout. Danza Hyatt, 18, and Dean Morgan, 30, got starts in putting together 49 for the first wicket.

Also, Bevon Brown, 47, Nikita Miller, 20, added 62 for the sixth, this after taking their team from 81 for five.

Ingram took 2-13 and Lambert 2-22.
