Parchment, Russell impress at 'Trial'
published: Saturday | December 16, 2006

Opening batsman Brenton Parchment and pacer Andre Russell were the stars on yesterday's opening day of Jamaica's final four-day trial match at Chedwin Park.

In this the final match to help select Jamaica's team for the Carib Beer and KFC Cup one-day tournament, Parchment hit 87 and Russell took four wickets.

Scores so far, David Bernard's XI 245; Tamar Lambert's XI 43-0

Playing for David Bernard's XI, Parchment and Simon Jackson led their team off to a good start by putting on 109 for the first wicket. Jackson gave good support to Parchment with 44, but wickets tumbled regularly after the two were separated.

Middle order

However, Carlton Baugh with 40 and Nikita Miller with 37 added 37 for the sixth wicket, to steady the lower middle order.

Russell led the way with 4-61 for Lambert's XI and was supported by Dennis Bulli -2-32, Bevon Brown 2-43 and Odean Brown 2-74.

Lambert's XI were 43-0 when stumps were drawn with Danza Hyatt, 25 and Ranville Brown, 13, the not out batsmen.

Coach Junior Bennett had mixed feelings.

"We were expecting them (Bernard's XI) to go on and score over 300 with the start they got, but you have to give credit to the bowlers, because they bowled well and the out cricket of Lambert's XI was good," Bennett explained.

"The openers, Hyatt and Brown, - they applied themselves in the evening and it's up to them to come tomorrow and start again," added Bennett.
