For a safer environment
published: Sunday | December 17, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

It is appalling, the seemingly callous manner in which what I consider to be a major criminal epidemic is being approached by the Government of this country.

Until drastic measures are put in place, we will see the situation grow worse with each passing day.

I would like to suggest a few ideas which I believe the Minister of National Security could implement in an effort to take a grip on this escalating crime situation:

  • Jamaica, with an area of 144 square miles, could be closely monitored by air with four helicopters based at strategic points across the country to track especially motor vehicles used in the commission of major crimes such as robberies and drive-by shootings.

  • Re-implement the Suppression of Crimes Act.

  • Declare a period of amnesty to bring in all illegal firearms then upon expiration of this period, re-implement a reviewed Gun Court Act which declares that a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment be handed down to any offender found guilty of breaches of the Firearms Act.

I strongly believe the citizens of Jamaica who are living in constant fear deserve a better life and would feel more confident if the Government seem at least to be making an effort to guarantee them their rights as law-abiding people to a safe environment in which to live and work.

    I am, etc.,
