We have enough 'tourist police'
published: Monday | December 18, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

No additional police officers are needed in Ochi to keep individuals from harassing tourists. I spent the last year in Ochi and every time a ship would come in, so did a bunch of 'tourist police' as we called them. Sometimes, at least four to six officers are standing in the cool shade of the trees at the corner where Island Village exists.

From my observation, it is always the same set of people who come into Ochi to harass the tourists. The police and security guards in the area know these people. Now all the police have to do is get bikes and just ride up and down that little area and keep an eye out for these people. There is no need for additional officers. If there are four to six officers standing under a shade tree, is that effective policing?

I am, etc.,
