Malcolm topples big brother for Petcom title
published: Wednesday | December 20, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Montegonian McKoy Malcolm defeated older sibling Marcus Malcolm in straight sets to lift the Under-18 boys' title as the ninth annual Petcom Junior Tennis Championships came to a close at the Ligueanea Club Courts on Monday night.

The victory capped off an impressive run for the 15-year-old, who also knocked off top-seeded Tyler Chin in straights in the semi-finals, before making quick work of big brother Marcus 6-1, 6-1 in the final.

In a tournament almost totally dominated by the westerners, McKoy also barged his way into the Under-16 finals, when he got past Andre Burrell in the semi-finals to set up another all-Montegonian showdown between himself and Donovan Crumbie.

The Under-16 final was, however, rescheduled due to time constraints. The boy's final between Joseph Ross, who got by Sheldon McIntosh in the semi-finals, and number one seed Jordan Harris, also had to be postponed.

Hard battle

In boy's 12 play, fourth-seeded Eric Delapena had to battle hard to eventually come away with 6-1, 0-6, 7-6 victory over fellow Montegonian Horatio Ludford. In the boy's Under-10 category, Luke Therrien stopped Simon Ho On 8-3 in the finals for that title.

Ericka Robertson wrapped up the top spot in girls Under-12 segment when she triumphed in three sets over Keonie Ford 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.

Girls 14 and Under play saw Sicquena Sinclair emerge victorious over training partner Shantal Blackwood 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, while in the girls open event, top seeded Shaneka Knight justified her ranking when she got the better of number two seed Calisia Reid 7-5, 6-4.
