The Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) is expected to resume tomorrow with two games scheduled, following a one-week layoff due to the threat posed by the malaria outbreak.
Arnett Gardens will travel to the Harbour View Mini Stadium where they face the home team at 7:00 p.m., while Portmore United will host defending champions Waterhouse 3:00 p.m. at Ferdie Neita Park.
It is however, by no means all systems go for the league and the threat posed by the epidemic remains quite real. One player from Boys' Town was already diagnosed with the disease, albeit now that he is on the road to recovery.
However, after consultation with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) medical committee headed by Dr. Winston Dawes, which recommended that football activities be postponed until further notice last week, the JFF has decided to begin play due to the minimal threat of the disease in those areas.
Going ahead with some fixtures
"By virtue of the recommendation from the medical committee, we have decided to go ahead with some of the fixtures," said Burchell Gibson, general secretary of the JFF.
"Some events like Sting and events at Mas Camp have been given the green light. We had concerns, but when we had a meeting with the committee they had no problem with it," he added.
The committee, which has already been given permission to resume play in all parish leagues except Kingston and St. Andrew, is also expected to meet tomorrow to determine which if any premier league games scheduled for Sunday will be played.
The NPL has now already missed a total of two match days. The JFF national Under-21 league will also resume tomorrow with Harbour View vs Arnett Gardens at 4:30p.m. and Portmore vs Waterhouse at 12:30 p.m.
