Brisk sales in western Jamaica
published: Friday | December 22, 2006

Mark Titus, Freelance Writer

Western Bureau:

Commercial stakeholders in western parishes are anticipating brisk sales throughout the Yuletide season.

President of the Trelawny Chamber of Commerce, Dennis Seivwright, says business is booming in the town of Falmouth, but used the opportunity to advocate for a transportation centre.

"Every street in the town is blocked, there is nowhere to park," he said. "They cannot have this kind of development without building a transport centre."

Business upbeat in Sav

Managing Director of Computer and Beyond, Wayne Salmon, said business was upbeat in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.

"I have spoken to a few of my business counterparts and they have no complaints. Great George Street is experiencing bumper to bumper traffic," he said.

A report from St. Elizabeth is that shopping activities have been steadily on the increase over the past 72 hours.

Meanwhile, the Area One police are pulling out all the stops to ensure the holiday period is incident-free.

Senior Superintendent Jasmine Tomlinson-Brown said all personnel in the four police divisions of Trelawny, St. James, Hanover and Westmoreland will be placed on the streets to strengthen the presence of the police.

"Administrative staff will be out of office; they will be placed at our financial institutions, gas stations and in the general commercial areas," she told The Gleaner yesterday.

"Starting this evening (yesterday), the presence of the St. James police, in particular, will be beefed up with personnel from Area One. This area is considered one of our trouble spots as far as traffic is concerned, and I am sure the presence of the police will make a difference."
