Performer of the Week - Henry stars at the track
published: Saturday | December 23, 2006

Wesley Henry... second in jockeys' championship behind Trinidadian Brian Harding.

Title-chasing lightweight jockey Wesley 'Callaloo' Henry is The Gleaner's Top Performer of the Week (December 13-21) by virtue of riding seven winners at Caymanas Park over the past three race days.

Last Saturday, the 31-year-old lightweight followed up Wednesday's (December 13) three-timer with another hat-trick including odds-on favourite ROYAL KINGDOM for this year's Derby winning trainer Eraldo Fullerton in the second race over 1500 metres, evens favourite WINNING MESSAGE for trainer Lawrence Freemantle in the eighth and 9-5 chance DIGI N' JIGGY in the 10th race (overnight allowance) for the William Read Memorial Trophy over 1300 metres.

As a result of last Saturday's performance, Henry pushed his season's tally to 86 - four adrift of reigning champion Brian Harding who followed up a winless Wednesday with only one winner - 2-5 favourite MARINERO in the third race over the round five course.

He, however, found himself further behind on Wednesday, having ridden one winner (CHING SING) in the closing race while Harding asserted his authority with a four-timer to extend the lead to seven.

After riding his second consecutive three-timer, Henry had this to say: "I was aiming to ride four winners, but QUEEN OF MY HEART was surprisingly beaten by the 94-1 outsider SOPHIA in the ninth race.

"Still, I'm pleased with the outcome. My intention was to cut into Harding's lead. I'm hanging in there," said the 1997 champion jockey, who has ridden extensively in the United States over the years.
