Bridgmohan smashes record
published: Saturday | December 23, 2006

MIAMI, Florida (CMC):

Jamaican 18-year-old riding sensation Jermaine Bridgmohan is the new record holder for wins in a Tropical at Calder season after scoring five wins in the past two race days.

Bridgmohan's 85th winner of the 2006-07 meet on Wednesday set a new mark for most winners by a jockey during the meet.

The previous record of 84 was held by the outstanding Panamanian jockey Cornelio Velasquez and was set in 2002-03.

In one of the most impressive starts to a riding career ever in North American horse racing, Bridgmohan is now set to win the jockeys" title at the current Tropical at Calder meet in only his first year of race riding. He rode two winners on Wednesday and three Thursday to be on 89 wins, 17 ahead of the experienced Manoel Cruz (72).

The 60-day meet concludes on January 2, 2007. Velasquez had achieved the previous record four years ago on the last day of a 53-day meet.

Bridgmohan's record win - on race day No.48 - Wednesday came in the eighth race aboard the four-year-old filly Island Miss, in a stirring three-horse finish. Under a patient ride in the US$12,000 seven-furlong event, Bridgmohan produced Island Miss with a storming run on the outside to win by a nose at odds of 8-to-1.

He beat Cruz astride Devine Force (5-1) in a winning time of one minute 27.14 seconds, and the 2-1 favourite Red Liquor n' Lace was only a further neck behind in third under jockey Joe Bravo.

Bridgmohan, who also had two second-place finishes on the card, completed his double in the US$10,415 seven-furlong 11th race with the 4-5 favourite Majical Way, five-length winner in 1:27.01.

Jamaican Ralph Ziadie, a Hall of Fame trainer in Florida, also scored two wins on Wednesday.
