The Gleaner grabs lion's share of BHFA awards

This season's corporate football kingpins, The Gleaner Company Limited, walked away big winners at the Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Business house awards ceremony, held recently, at the Scotiabank Sports Club, copping six of the 14 awards handed out.

However, the team received even more encouragement when they were treated to a quick footballing lesson from national technical director Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic, who had also spoken briefly at the event.

Surrounded by keen eyes and sharp ears, the charismatic 62-year-old Serbian-born Milutinovic briefly explained proper defending techniques, kicking methods and even took the time out to play a quick game of football tennis, in which he showed surprising and exceptional agility, with KSAFA Business House 'Coach of the Year' Michael 'Jah Mikes' Williams.

In addition to the 'Coach of the Year' award, The Gleaner also ended the season with the KSAFA Business House KO Trophy, the KSAFA Challenge Cup and the all-island Cham-pion of Champions Trophy, which saw them defeat St. Ann team, Kaiser Bauxite, in the final at Kaiser Sports Club, Discovery Bay.

Top scorer

The Gleaner's Fabian Nether-sole received the award for the Division One leading goalscorer, which he wrapped up with 11 goals and he was also the top-scorer in the knockout competition with five goals.

National Water Commission (NWC), the team which prevented a clean sweep for The Gleaner, received the Division One league title after beating The Gleaner in the final.

The NWC team also won the Business House five-a-side competition, in which The Gleaner did not participate.

Also, the NWC's captain, Garfield Robinson, won the Division One 'Most Valuable Player' (MVP) Award.

The Shipping Association of Jamaica won the Division Two league title and their player, Hawthorne Ellis, was voted their 'Most Valuable Player'.

Courts Jamaica Limited, which was promoted along with Shipping Association of Jamaica this season, walked away with the business house 'Fair Play' award having only conceded five yellow cards all season.

Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (Petrojam), a team many considered favourites to advance to Division One, had to be content to settle instead with a 'Leading Goalscorer' award for Ricardo Stultz, who also plays with Premier League outfit, August Town.

The striker managed to net 19 goals, while Petrojam's mana-ger/coach, Raymond Quallo, was handed the 'Manager of the Year Award', an award many believed was a shoo-in for The Gleaner's first-time manager, Barrington Deer, as his Division One team played in all four Business House 11-a-side finals and won three.

The function also honoured two outstanding contributors to the sport - former national player and current Scotiabank coach, William 'Roy' Welch, who was presented with the Abe Alexander Memorial Award for his long service in the arena of football, as well as cricket; and the BHFA Honourary Award to its former president, Lorna Franklin, the NWC's perennial manager, for her outstanding and dedicated service.
