Remains found at dump
published: Saturday | December 30, 2006

Senior police investigators and pathologists are to visit a site at the Martins Hill Dump in Manchester this morning after the possible remains of missing couple Richard and Julia Lyn were found at the location yesterday evening.

A police source told The Gleaner last night that, based on information received from an eyewitness to the dumping of two barrels at the site, there was good reason to believe the remains belong to the missing Mandeville couple.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Leslie Green confirmed that detectives visited the site following new information received by investigators probing the case. He said "a specific area of interest" was identified which would have been guarded by police officers last night.

When The Gleaner visited the scene, tight security was observed in the area, preventing bystanders from entering.

One policeman who visited the scene told The Gleaner he saw the torso of one body but could not make out whether it was of a man or woman because of the dim lighting.

"We believe that the area contains two bodies ... We will be conducting a full examination tomorrow (today) with the pathologists attending from Kingston," ACP Green said.

According to him, it would have been unwise to conduct further analyses due to dim light late yesterday which could have compromised possible evidence.

No more information

However, when pressed for further details by The Gleaner/Power 106 News, ACP Green declined to provide more information.

"When daylight comes we will be able to say much more," he said.

It is understood that the information which led the police to visit the site of interest was revealed during yesterday's second day of intense interrogation with the two suspects held in connection with the disappearance of the couple.

Last week Saturday, the police called off a five-day search at the Martins Hill Dump, having combed through tonnes of solid waste disposed there.

Mr. and Mrs. Lyn, 75 and 71 respectively, who operated Bargain House Furniture Store on Park Crescent, Mandeville have been missing since December 10.

On that day, their Battersea home, near Ingleside in Mandeville, was found ransacked. Several items including appliances and their two motor vehicles were also stolen but have since been recovered.

On Wednesday, the police began interviewing the two suspects, Kevin Powell and Lennox Swaby, who have been in custody for almost two weeks. Police claimed the interviews had been delayed because of a "reluctance" by Mandeville attorneys to represent the accused men.
