Probe into shooting of wanted man
published: Saturday | December 30, 2006

Noel Thompson, Freelance Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

Two days after being shot by the police in Carey Park, Trelawny, a man wanted on a warrant for shooting and wounding with intent, remains in hospital.

The Gleaner understands that 28-year-old Roxroy Daley is critical and is in intensive care under police guard.

The Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) is to conduct an investigation into the shooting, as residents contend that Daley was shot in cold blood, minutes after a police party accosted him along a parochial road on Wednesday.

On the heels of the shooting, irate residents blocked the roadway with debris to vent their frustration.

"We are not shielding any bad man. Even if he is a wrongdoer there is no law that justifies that if you hold on to the person you should shoot him," one resident said. Similar sentiments were echoed by others.

Daley, alias 'Pinchie', of Carey Park and Tharpe Street in Falmouth, Trelawny, was reportedly being sought for allegedly shooting a man in the Falmouth Market sometime ago.

Eyewitness account

An eyewitness who asked not to be named, gave an account of what happened to The Gleaner.

"I was lying on a bench along the road (a dirt track) when I saw a private car with three men drive up. 'Pinchie' was right beside me when they came out, held onto him and asked where he lived," he recalled.

"Him show them his house and they walked with him up there. Shortly afterwards, one of the officers returned to the car, took what resembled a .38 gun from beneath the seat and returned to the house. No time after that we hear four shots fired. Two other police teams came on the scene and a fifth shot went off. Four policemen held him by his feet and hands and threw him inside the car trunk."

But the police report that they received reports that Daley was at a house in Carey Park and went in search of him. It is said that on the policemen's arrival, Daley pointed a gun in their direction and was shot. A .38 pistol and a magazine with seven live rounds were reportedly taken from him.

Additional charges of assault at common law and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition are pending against Daley.
