The Editor, Sir:In Jamaica today, we find that standards are progressively being lowered in every aspect of life, and more surprisingly, the standard bearers find themselves either making excuses for this sorry state of existence or are utterly confused by what is taking place.
Things are now so bad that the upper class and the middle class are fearful of even their shadows. The lower classes and the distortionists (the dancehall icons) among us, are in the ascendancy in terms of imposing their values, and are influencing and enforcing a sub-culture, which is dragging us all down to hell.
Liked but disliked
For the very first time since Independence, we have ourselves a Prime Minister who is liked by many (across the political divide), but at the same time, one who no one would want to have represent them or the country in any forum where she is required to answer searching questions on national matters.
For the first time, we have a Prime Minister who does not command the respect of her parliamentary colleagues. No one can accuse this Prime Minister of being a one-man band. On the other hand, in regards to this band (the Cabinet), this represents the only band where the members direct the leader. We are a rudderless ship; we lack proper values, morals, discipline, law and order, and good work ethics and attitude.
I am, etc.,
