For most of us, attending a formal event is few and far between. However, when we are at these functions, how do we know if we are using the correct fork or when to start eating?
We may be confused just by looking at the many utensils that are set before us, wondering which to use to eat what food.
Here are a few tips that will ensure that you do not embarrass yourself or your family and friends when the occasion calls for you to be formal.
You usually begin eating when everyone gets served. However, if it is a large event, you may begin eating as soon as you are served. Check to see, however, that at least three other persons are eating.
Posture is important. Ensure that you sit straight without pressing your elbows on the table.
The napkin was not set on the table to be placed under your neck. Placing the napkin around your throat is not only incorrect, but also embarrassing. You are, however, permitted to unfold the napkin and place it in your lap. You can use it to wipe your mouth if necessary.
It is never OK to slurp soup. If it is too hot, wait a few minutes until it cools. It is also advised to move the soup away from your body when filling the spoon.
If you want to remove unwanted food from your mouth, use the fork to remove it. Removing inedible food from your mouth with your fingers is unacceptable in most cases.
There are some foods that must be eaten with the hands, or otherwise would look silly if eaten with a fork. Bread should be broken and not cut. Cookies, chips, fries, hors d'oeuvres, hamburgers, small fruits and berries are usually referred to as finger foods, hence use your fingers.
Utensils are usually arranged in the order that the food will be served. If you are unsure what to use, watch the person beside you to see what utensil they use to eat what food.
