published: Sunday | December 31, 2006

Beckford

THE annual WATA/Ciclon/JC development meet will kick off the 2007 track and field season at Old Hope Road, on Saturday, January 6.

Organised by the Jamaica College Sports Development Committee, the 14th staging of the WATA/CICLON/JC meet will again serve as a qualifying meet for the annual Boys and Girls Athletics Championships, set for March 28-31.

The events to be contested are - 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m, while the hurdles events will be 70m, 80m, 100m, and 110m. In the field, there will be long jump, discus, high jump, shot put and pole vault.

A maximum of six competitors per class, per team, per event will be allowed, while athletes will be required to wear their regular competition colours.

WATA/JC will again be awarding 10 individual trophies to the athletes selected by the judges in each class and category as the most outstanding. There will also be trophies for the overall male and female champions.

Judged

However, Ian Forbes, chairman of the organising committee said in a release: "It is to be noted that the quality of performance by an athlete will not necessarily be judged in terms of the points scored."

The organisers will once again honour an old boy. This year's honouree is Alan Beckford who, according to the release, has contributed immeasurably to the school's tremendous success in track and field and other sports.

Entry forms for the event are available at Jamaica College, the office of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) and JC's website www.jcoba.org.
