The Editor, Sir:
Having read your lead story about using voter fingerprints for crime investigation in The Gleaner of December 22, 2006, I am writing to give my wholehearted support to the proposal to create legislation that can aid the police in the fight against crime. The proposal put forward by two prominent citizens of this country - Mr. Danville Walker Director of Elections and Mrs. Jean Anderson, a business-woman and senior Justice of the Peace is very thoughtful and welcome.
No one can deny that crime and violence are overtaking the country and any measures that can be implemented to stop or reduce this monstrous cancer will be beneficial to all concerned. I take note with some degree of disappointment the objection raised by Mr. Delroy Chuck, who has been the spokesperson on justice for the Jamaica Labour Party.
The vicious attack on and abduction of the Lyn's family is a case in point and also the number of unsolved murders, makes the suggestion most relevant at this point in time. One should also take note of the response to the suggestion by the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General Mr. A. J. Nicholson. As the saying goes while we fiddled, Rome burnt.
Law-abiding citizens are definitely concerned and many are apprehensive day and night as to who will be the next victim. The time to act is now.
I am, etc.,
