Three injured, two killed in Saturday shootings
published: Monday | January 1, 2007

Two persons, including a 72-year-old woman, were murdered, and a man injured in separate incidents on Saturday, according to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN).

In the first incident, the elderly woman, Mary Graham, was shot dead at her home in Alexandria district, Chapelton, Clarendon.

The CCN's Clarendon liaison officer reports that at approxi-mately 11:00 p.m., residents heard explosions and summoned the police.

On their arrival, Graham was found inside her house suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators from the Chapelton Police Station say that there were no signs of forced entry.

Meanwhile, the Grant's Pen Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 36-year-old Collin Tapper of Andrew's Pen Lane in Kingston 8.

He was killed approximately 11:55 p.m., while among a group of men playing cards on the lane.

It is reported that three men, one of whom pulled a gun, approached the group and opened fire, killing Tapper.

In the meantime, the St. Thomas police have arrested two more persons in connection with a series of shootings in Seaforth. This brings to six, the number of persons taken into custody so far.

In the latest incident, a 64-year-old shopkeeper was shot just hours after the police concluded an operation in the community.

There have been six shootings in five days, which have so far claimed one life.

"The persons arrested, we think, can help us in solving the shootings that have been going on," Superintendent Steve McGregor told The Gleaner.

He also said the police have banned all parties and dance sessions in the community throughout the New Year's weekend.
