WESTERN BUREAU:

The St. James police started the new year on a positive note following a raid which yielded its first gun find for 2007 yesterday morning.

Reports are that, about 6:00 a.m. on Monday, the Granville police, acting on information, were in the process of carrying out a raid at a house located at Meadowvale, Retirement district, St. James, when a man ran from the home. He was later apprehended and a firearm taken from his person.

"A 9mm pistol and 11 rounds were taken from him," said Detective Corporal Michael Moore. He added that the make of the gun was unknown. "Usually it is printed on the weapon," he explained. "In this case it is not there, so the expert will have to determine that."

The man has been identified as 20-year-old painter, Capildev 'Shooter' Shaw, of a Cornwall Courts address in St. James. He has been arrested and charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. It was not yet known when the case will go to trial.
