Waterhouse batter Naggo Head
published: Thursday | January 4, 2007

Ainsley Walters, Freelance Writer

CHAMPIONS Waterhouse yesterday battered last-place Naggo Head 4-0 at Ferdie Neita Park, ensuring whatever happened in Harbour View's late game against Seba would not affect their five-point lead atop the Wray and Nephew Premier League.

Waterhouse kept their unbeaten run intact and moved to 33 points with second-half goals from Roberto Fletcher, Irvino English, substitute Kirk Ramsey and Kevin Lamey in stoppage-time.

However, Naggo Head striker Carlos Barrett wasted two chances, which could have turned the match on its head.

The underdogs could have surged ahead in the 40th minute when midfielder Layton Barrett won a penalty, which happened to be the first chance of the match.

However, his brother, Carlos, chose goalkeeper Richard McCal-lum's strong left side and his shot was saved by the diving national reserve goalie.

Solid left-foot shot

Waterhouse came out stronger after the break and surged ahead in the 53rd minute when Fletcher, under pressure from his former Waterhouse teammate, Baris Johnson on the left side of the box, buried a solid left-foot shot inside the far post.

Naggo Head were gifted a goal nine minutes later but Carlos Barrett again failed to capitalise on what would have been the equaliser.

Waterhouse central defender Craig White, standing almost on the touchline on the left side, played a ridiculously-tame back pass to goalie McCallum, who was almost standing on his goalline.

Barrett, who was tracking White, hardly had to move three paces to get to the ball, which he dribbled almost into the six-yard box before unbelievably booting straight at McCallum, who used his experience to seal the angle at his near post.

Naggo Head paid dearly for Barrett's second gaffe as Waterhouse struck almost immediately on the counter through English, who pounced on Ramsey's rebound with glee from a few yards out.

Ramsey, who played the first round of the season at Naggo Head, was determined to get his name on the scoresheet after replacing Desmond Breakenridge at half-time.

His breakthrough came in the 80th minute after Naggo Head muffed a free-kick on the right side of Waterhouse's box.

A lightning-fast counter-attack saw Ramsey breaking from inside his half with three other Waterhouse players as options before skipping past one defender.

Despite over-dribbling into the path of goalie Leon Gaffe, Ramsey still managed to squeeze off a shot under the 'keeper.

Lamey nonchalantly rounded off the rout after Gaffe was pulled off his line and was nowhere in sight as the Drewsland hitman scored into an empty goal on the opposite side.

Waterhouse 4

Roberto Fletcher 53rd minute

Irvino English 64th

Kirk Ramsey 80th

Kevin Lamey 90+

Naggo Head 0
