Cops issue safety tips
published: Friday | January 5, 2007

With A rate of one murder every three and a half hours since the start of the New Year and the resulting fear that has now gripped some communities, the police have released a number of safety tips.

Persons travelling home at nights are being advised to call ahead and alert family members, so they can assist with the opening of gates and grilles.

"If you suspect that you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station, avoid driving on any lonely road, call 119 for help. Don't immediately drive home," said Senior Superintendent Devon Watkis, head of the Organised Crime Investigation Division.

He advises that persons should have proper lighting on the outside of their home and cut overgrown bushes.

The officer suggests that if persons live alone, they should make contact with a neighbour while making their way home.

In the event of a robbery, the victim(s) should remain calm and cooperate as much as possible, but must take keen note of the robber(s) and vehicles if they are mobile.

SSP Watkis is also advising motorists to remain on the main roads at nights and avoid short cuts.
