The Editor, Sir:
The recent attacks on the police force have left many Jamaicans in deep regret and grief for the lives of those policemen who dedicated themselves to uphold law and order for the betterment of the country. We are also concerned about what level of emphasis will be placed on bringing the perpetrators to justice and how or when will the citizens be able to put their confidence in the State which has the responsibility to protect its citizens from such vicious attacks.
I am an ardent believer in socio-economic stability and peace. Therefore, the state should do whatever is necessary to bring back confidence to us Jamaicans who are now frustrated with the high level of crime and violence that plague this beautiful island.
Let's look at some of our 'garrisons'. Over the past two decades, several factories were closed between Kingston and St. Catherine, thousands of jobs were lost and the people were left to fend for themselves.
Youngsters unable to acquire skills to get employment turn to the gun as a means of survival. After robbing or killing a few times it becomes the norm, especially if there are no strict penalties, besides going to prison and eat and drink at taxpayers' expense. They will become bold and fearless. The result is, attacking the security forces, murder, and a host of other criminal activities.
Unite
Let us put away the politics and come together, both the opposition and the ruling party, and formulate real measures that will curb crime in this country. Give the security forces the resources they need along with adequate training. Yes, we are aware of the corrupt members of the force but the majority are willing to do good but find themselves frustrated with the system. Until our leaders take this approach, we will continue to suffer from the hands of these unscrupulous individuals.
Finally my fellow citizens, we also have a part to play. If we don't unite in the fight against crime and violence it may never decline. We have to be our brother's keeper and play our part in the community to find ways such as social clubs, to empower the youths and educate them on the need to elevate themselves from succumbing to crime.
I am etc.
