Portland residents protest cell tower
published: Tuesday | January 9, 2007

Tensions are mounting among residents of Fairy Hill in Portland, who are complaining about plans by mobile telecommunications company Digicel to erect a cellular tower in their community.

The telecommunications firm has, in an effort to bring the matter to closure, requested a meeting with the residents this week to discuss the installation of the cellular tower.

However, attorney-at-law Richard Harris, who is representing the residents, has threatened to file an injunction to put a stop to roadwork that is under way to create a pathway to the planned location of the cellular tower.

Construction of the cellular tower was approved by the Portland Parish Council on June 5 last year, and the approval notice stated that any objection to the construction of the tower should have been submitted to the parish council no later than 14 days prior to the serving of the notice.

Checks by The Gleaner with the parish council revealed that no letter of objection was received by them.
