Police National open six-point gap
published: Tuesday | January 9, 2007

Robert Bailey, Freelance Reporter

Police National extended its lead atop the Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA)/Jamaica National (JN) Super League to six points after a 3-2 victory over Cavalier at Constant Spring Complex on Saturday.

Police National lead the standings with 20 points, six more than the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) who were beaten 1-0 by Duhaney Park.

Santos remained in third place on 14 as well, but an inferior goal difference, after they played to 0-0 draw with bottom-placed Barbican (5), while Duhaney Park (13) moved up to fourth place.

In the day's other match, Mountain View (13) defeated 10-man Maverley/Hughenden (7) 3-1, while former Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) contender Constant Spring (8) were held to 0-0 draw by Meadhaven United (11).

At the Excelsior High School, hosts Mountain View, led by a brace from Uwhen McLean, came out firing in the first half and took the lead in the sixth minute when McLean fired home a powerful point-blank range shot past goalkeeper Rayan Spencer.

ROCKET

Seven minutes later Davane Patterson equalised for Maverley-Hughenden with a powerful 25 yards shot which flew like a rocket past goalkeeper Damion Murphy.

McLean completed his brace in the 29th minute when he volleyed home a well taken corner kick from Sheldon Gordon to give his team a 2-1 lead at half-time.

On the resumption, the home team continued to dominate possession and were finally rewarded in the 61st minute when Charlton Williams dribbled his way past two Maverley-Hughenden defenders then calmly placed the ball in the back of the net to make it 3-1.

CONTROVERSIAL DEFEAT

Omar Stanley, coach of Mountain View, said he was pleased with his team's performance.

"I am very satisfied with the three points," said Stanley. "In terms of our play it was far below our standards, because we could have done far better and scored far more goals."

Junior Dennis, coach of Maverley-Hughenden, said: "It was of more of a controversial defeat for my team because I see where we had two goals scored against us that should not have been allowed. One was offside, and other one the player was outside then came inside then get the ball and score."

He added: "I am very satisfied with my team's performance because we had only 10 players and they really came out and represented us. Hopefully (in) the next game we are going to come out with our full quad and show the people what we can do," Dennis explained.
