Central Kingston created a mild upset with a 1-0 win over Mountain View as the Western Union/KSAFA Jackie Bell KO continued yesterday at the Courtney Walsh Oval, Excelsior High School.
Central Kingston, which sits atop the Major League, sent Super League outfit Mountain View packing courtesy of an 83rd minute strike from Leon Small.
Winning coach Karl Russell, said his team has been preparing from August and was not surprised of the victory.
Said Russell: "We worked hard and I realised that it is paying off. Beating a Super League team is credit to my team."
Russell even went further to warn the big teams that his giant-killing act is not over and his team is going a far way.
"We are going as far as how the players want to take it. We don't see ourselves stopping just like that. We are working to play the bigger teams, that is my objective," added Russell.
Hugh Anderson, assistant coach of Mountain View, summed up his team's poor performance.
"I didn't think we played particularly well. We never stick to the game plan. We played a game where we attacked down the flanks... today we played direct and ended up playing their style of game. As a result we lost," Anderson analysed.
On a dusty playing field, the home team took control early and forced Central Kingston back in their own half.
The tall Jahmiah Pettigrew, Patrick Jones, Nigel Francis Fabian Cunningham and Sheldon Gordon were proving a handful for the smaller build opponents but could not find the breakthrough.
But as the game grew longer, the yellow and blue-clad Central Kingston grew in confidence and began forging forward.
The Allison brothers, Richard and Eric, along with Ricardo Taylor, Owen Johnson, Small and Kemar Brown, began to believe in themselves and it was no surprise when they got the all-important goal seven minutes from time.
The hard running Small found space just outside the box to fire home past a diving Damion Murphy in goal, to silence the home fans.
The competition continues today with three games across the Corporate Area.
Super League team Duhaney Park host Santos; Wray and Nephew National Premier League giant Harbour View travel to the Bull Pen to play Bull Bay, while the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) hope to ambush Arnett Gardens at Up Park Camp. All games start at 3:00 p.m.
