Catch of the year
published: Wednesday | January 10, 2007

Lauriston Reid (right) shows off his big catch, a 150lb Tarpon fish. Helping him is Kevin Bailey. - Norman Grindley/Deputy Chief Photographer

In the second week of November, Lauriston Reid, a little-known fisherman from Kingston, had the entire country talking when his 150lb catch was captured on the front page of The Gleaner.

The tarpon the man caught was six feet, six inches long and dominated water-cooler talk for quite some time. An average tarpon weighs about 60lb.

"Mi frighten fi realise dat it was a giant of a fish. Mi couldn't believe it!" said an excited Reid as he posed for pictures with his giant fish.

Caught in the waters of the Kingston Harbour, news of the oversized fish drew a massive crowd, which included tourists visiting the island for the very first time. What a welcome!
