The Editor, Sir:
In response to the article in The Gleaner of January 9, 2007, regarding the Hon. Portia Simpson's decline in popularity, I was, and still am, a supporter of the current Prime Minister, in spite of the many setbacks that have befallen her administration.
When she took power last year I, like many, expected a dramatic shift in the current status quo of the ruling government. I expected dramatic changes and at first was disappointed that these changes did not happen. However, I have come to realise that her rise to the pinnacle of political power was not achieved by her 'sucking up' to those who wield the real power in Jamaica, but by her genuine belief in the common man. She reminds me of her mentor Michael Manley, a leader who was advanced for the times.
Highly respected
She is highly respected by the rank and file of the Jamaican people and continues to be very humble in her leadership role. Portia Simpson has matured and has surprised many people in not only her ability to foster cooperation of the leadership of Jamaica, but to become a stateswoman and a role model for all Jamaican women.
I see great things in her future, and if there is ever a leader that can galvanise the Jamaican people and remove the polarisation in our society, then she is that leader.
I am, etc.,
