MBMC gears up for international events
published: Thursday | January 11, 2007

Western Bureau:

Top rally driver, Dean Corrodus, was re-elected for a second consecutive term as president of the Montego Bay Motoring Club (MBMC) at the club's annual general meeting (AGM), which was held at the Pelican Restaurant, in the western city, last Thursday night.

"I am looking forward to what should be a challenging year but I am confident that it will be a successful one," said Corrodus, who had previously served a two-year term as president.

"I will not be seeking re-election next year so part of the plan this year is to groom a successor."

The new administration reads as follows: Dean Corrodus - president, Mark Groves Sr. - vice-president, Chrisetta Beckford - secretary and Emiel Smith - treasurer. Maurice Whittingham Jr., Matthew Gore, Pernell Fitz-Coy, Jordan Powell and Gregory Brissett.

In outlining his administration's plans for the new year, Corrudus said it should be one chock-full of excitement as they intend to stage at least one major international event alongside the regular calendar events. He also said that fans could look out for new drivers, new cars and a new international focus.

Showcasing Montego Bay

"We are looking at staging a major two-day international event in Montego Bay to showcase both our motorsports as well as Montego Bay as a premier tourism destination," said Corrudus. "We are looking at having a part of the event taking place on the Howard Cooke Boulevard as this would bring a lot of focus to the city."

In addition to the planned international event, which Corrudus is expecting to attract participants from the Eastern Caribbean and the United States, the MBMC wants to make its regular calendar events extra special. These include the Wet & Slide Dexterity series, the Raynor King Memorial Rally, the Lloyds of Montego Bay Tarmac Rally and the Moreland Sprint.

"It is going to be a full year of excitement but we are ready for it," noted Corrudus. "The MBMC plans to be in the limelight for the entire year as our drivers are all ready and raring to go out and storm the racing circuit."

The first assignment for the new administration will be this Saturday night's prize-giving and awards presentation ceremony, which will be staged at the Pelican Restaurant in Montego Bay.
