LETTER OF THE DAY - Mt Rosser poses danger to World Cup fans
published: Friday | January 12, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

If ever a situation demands a remedy it is that which takes place daily on the Mt. Rosser/Mt. Diablo road. Some time ago, I wrote saying that the situation presented an accident going to happen - a potential disaster. The situation has only got worse every day. The vehicles, which are now travelling along that winding road, are bigger and longer than before. The delays being caused by vehicles which get stuck around a corner, or are "broken down' for some reason, or are just too large to pass each other on the narrow road, are also getting longer and longer.

Only today (January 9), a lecturer at our institution had to postpone her lecture because of a delay on the Mt. Rosser/Mt. Diablo road. Many other important engagements have been similarly affected. What is more, the law is broken every day as long-bodied vehicles have to move over to the opposite side of the road in front of oncoming vehicles, which is illegal, in order to negotiate the corners. Such a situation should not be allowed to continue in any ordered society.

A regulation ought to be enacted whereby no vehicle which is more than say 25 feet. in length should be allowed to travel on that road. Recently, a restriction was placed on heavy duty vehicles using the Fern Gully road.

Now long overdue

A regulation restricting the use of the Mount Rosser road is now long overdue. This is vital for the safety of those who travel in motor cars or normal vehicles, who face disaster every day. Since this is the shortest road between Kingston and the north coast, the safety of persons travelling to the coming World Cup Cricket matches will be in serious jeopardy, if nothing is done. It would be wise to enact the restrictions from now, so that commercial businesses, which use this road, can adjust to transporting their goods in smaller vehicles before the World Cup begins.

May the Lord grant us wisdom and courage to remedy this sad and dangerous situation, before an actual disaster takes place.

I am. etc.,
